{"id":6017,"date":"2022-04-21T11:39:51","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T02:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnic.jp\/english\/?p=6017"},"modified":"2022-04-25T12:40:42","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T03:40:42","slug":"cnic-symposium-nuclear-crisis-and-peaceful-use-of-nuclear-energy-implications-of-the-rokkasho-reprocessing-plant-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnic.jp\/english\/?p=6017","title":{"rendered":"CNIC SYMPOSIUM: Nuclear Crisis and Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy: Implications of the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant Operation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<em>~ Symposium to Commemorate the Launch of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Special Site of the Citizens&#8217; Nuclear Information Center<\/em><br \/><br \/>In recent years, the situation regarding nuclear weapons has become increasingly tense: in 2019, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty expired; in 2021, the U.S., the U.K. and Australia signed AUKUS including support the development and deployment of nuclear submarines by Australia; in Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian government has indicated that it is prepared to use nuclear weapons.<br \/>Against this backdrop, Japan plans to complete the construction of the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant in 2022, after many years of repeated delays.<br \/>This symposium will consider the significance of the operation of the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant in today&#8217;s nuclear crisis and what was supposed to be the &#8220;peaceful use&#8221; of nuclear energy.<br \/>(This event is supported by Act Beyond Trust.)<br \/><br \/>Speakers: <br \/>1. Frank von Hippel (Princeton University) <em>Ukraine invasion and reprocessing<\/em><br \/>2. Alan J. Kuperman (University of Texas) <em>Nuclear Facilities and Terrorism<\/em><br \/>3. Kang Jungmin (Independent Analyst, Former Director of the Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission) <em>Risk of missile attack on nuclear facilities<\/em><br \/>4.
