Reference Material: Main Accidents and Breakdowns at Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Fuel-related Facilities (FY2024)
By Kamisawa Chihiro
Major accidents and breakdowns that occurred in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and nuclear fuel-related facilities in FY2024 are summarized in this report. The data were obtained from the Japanese database system Nuclear Facilities Information Archives NUCIA (www.nucia.jp/), press releases, reports from nuclear-related business operators, and nuclear regulatory inspection reports. This list of accidents and breakdowns was compiled from the reports by including cases classified by NUCIA as “T” (reports of trouble: 1 item) and “M” (maintenance quality information: 49 items).
Similar troubles have been repeated at the same facilities, such as the satellite phone failure at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, the air exhaust system failure at the Rokkasho reprocessing plant, and the emergency gas treatment system failure at Onagawa. The only case to be reported as “T” is that of the primary cooling water cooler system at Mihama Unit 3, but other horrifying troubles have occurred, such as a fire in the main control room at Tokai Daini. There are, as ever, many reports of fires.
