Group Intro: NPO ONE LIFE (Ogasawara Native Ecology Life)

The “ONE LIFE” organization that I represent is an NPO that thinks, learns, and practices a sustainable lifestyle together with the islanders in Ogasawara Village. We aim at a self-sufficient island lifestyle by and for the islanders through such activities as running citizens’ farms, the use of compost, and the operation of a local currency.

For our main activities at present, we are implementing, for example, a barefoot hike as an Earth Day event in April and a Native Night in June to promote a lifestyle that avoids using electricity as far as possible. Since the Fukushima nuclear accident, we have staged screenings of movies related to nuclear power, such as Ashes to Honey and A2-BC, and have also conducted anti-nuke signature campaigns. We are hoping that the movie screenings and the implementation of events will result in an increase in the number of people who would like to change to a sustainable lifestyle.

Just as we were thinking that nuclear power would be slowly phased out, the news about the literature survey for a nuclear waste disposal site on Minamitorishima reached us. This aroused us to have our first nuclear power study meeting in a long while, to which we invited Takano Satoshi of CNIC to come and give a talk. We would like to thank CNIC and Takano-san for coming to our islands.
